Coach Paulo Duarte named a 25-man group, with Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy included and Ilaix Moriba among the returning players. CAF also reported that Naby Keita, Mohamed Mady Camara, Cheick Oumar Conde, Dembo Sylla, Morgan Guilavogui and Issiaga Sylla were not included in the squad.
That makes the opener an important early test for both sides. With only six group matches available and just one qualifying position open to the three non-host nations, points dropped against a direct rival can matter more than they would in a conventional four-team section with two places available.

South Africa's second qualifier is scheduled away to Eritrea at a neutral venue in Cairo on 30 September. Guinea are due to host Kenya on 1 October.
