Zimbabwe 1–2 DR Congo: Wissa drives Leopards to six points from six
Yoane Wissa scored and assisted as DR Congo beat Zimbabwe 2–1 in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying, with Marshall Munetsi's stoppage-time goal arriving too late for the hosts.
DR Congo made it two wins from two in Group E of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying with a 2–1 victory over Zimbabwe on Monday night. Yoane Wissa opened the scoring after 30 minutes, Samuel Moutoussamy doubled the lead in first-half added time, and Marshall Munetsi pulled one back for Zimbabwe in the 93rd minute.
The result leaves DR Congo with six points from their opening two qualifiers, while Zimbabwe remain on three. It was a significant early group result because both sides had started the campaign with victories: DR Congo beat Equatorial Guinea 2–0 and Zimbabwe won 3–2 away to Sierra Leone.
Wissa sets the tone for DR Congo
Wissa was central to the visitors' first-half advantage. SuperSport, carrying an AFP report, says the forward scored in the 30th minute after Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze failed to hold a cross. Wissa then supplied the pass for Moutoussamy to make it 2–0 in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.
That gave DR Congo a strong cushion at the break. Wissa remained a threat after half-time and struck the woodwork shortly after the hour mark, according to the same report. Zimbabwe, however, improved after the interval and kept the contest alive until the closing stages.
Munetsi's goal in the 93rd minute made the final moments uncomfortable for the visitors, but there was not enough time for Zimbabwe to complete the comeback. How Group E looks
After two rounds, DR Congo sit top of Group E on six points with four goals scored and one conceded. Zimbabwe are second on three points, level with Equatorial Guinea but ahead on goal difference, while Sierra Leone are fourth without a point. Those standings are listed by Eurosport after the 28 September fixtures.
For Zimbabwe, the defeat does not erase the value of their opening win over Sierra Leone, but it makes the next qualifying window more important. For DR Congo, six points from six is the strongest possible start and gives them early control of the group before the next round.
What happens next
The next Group E fixtures are scheduled for 11 November 2026. Zimbabwe are due to face Equatorial Guinea, while DR Congo are scheduled to host Sierra Leone. With only two matches played so far, the group remains open, but DR Congo have already created a three-point advantage over both Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea.
